Wapping Youth FC vs Buckhurst Hill 14th September 2014 Kick off 1.30pm
The first league game of the season and its away to Wapping Youth FC. With a host of new players coming into the Buckhurst Hill squad, today is going to be difficult day for the boys to gel as a team
Buckhurst Hill kick off
Buckhurst Hill make a bright start and have early possession and the home side are having difficulty getting out of their own half. The pitch being devoid of grass from one goal to the other goal right down the center of the pitch, is not helping the more skillful players.
14mins: Goal 1-0: totally against the run of play, a hoofed clearance takes a deflection off a Buckhurst Hill player, and from the corner and unmarked player at the far post nods it home.
18mins: A close shave for Buckhurst Hill, a through ball is handled by the striker but the referee plays on and his strike is narrowly wide.
26mins: Goal 2-0: Wapping turn over the ball in midfield and the skill full number 11 rides 3 Buckhurst Hill challenges and calmly dispatches his shot to the top corner to double the home sides lead.
30mins: Goal 2-1: Wapping try to play out from the back and Salmon from center back makes a great challenge to rob possession of the ball from Wappings center back, Spencer races onto the loose ball and calmly places it into the far corner.
Wapping Youth FC Kick off
1min: The referee awards a free kick to Wapping and the no7 tries his luck from distance. The dipping shot takes a horrible bounce on the rough dusty surface and Rawlings has to action quickly to avoid a certain goal.
The game opens up, with neither team getting any clear-cut chances and the rough pitch and some questionable refereeing decisions is disrupting the flow of the game. Both teams are having better luck out wide, but the ball keeps ending up central to the pitch and play keeps breaking down.
20mins: Goal 2-2: Buckhurst Hill draw level with new boy Kelly netting his first goal for the club. A deep corner eventually sees the ball drop to Kelly to prod into the roof of the net from close range, and its game on.
The game gets more stretched and Buckhurst Hill keep getting pulled up by the referee, who seems hell bent on giving the home team every decision and Rawlings sees a flurry of free-kicks flying in on him which he deals with.
40mins: We are in extra-time and a high boot from a Wapping player sees the referee give an indirect free kick in the area. The ball is rolled to Lord, who’s clean strike rattles the frame of the post and crossbar and Wapping survive as the referee blows for full time.
So it’s a draw to start the league campaign, which upon reflection was the right outcome. This was a scrappy game with neither team able to generate some good flowing football, with the pitch and referee ensuring the game wasn’t one for the purists, and wont last long in the memory.
Result FT 2-2
